Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). Even in the speeches of Henry and his nobles, there are many chilling references to the human cost of war.
But we also hear bishops conniving for war to postpone a bill that would tax the church, and soldiers expecting to reap profits from the conflict. Some of it glorifies war, especially the choruses and Henry’s speeches urging his troops into battle. Henry V is Shakespeare’s most famous “war play” it includes the storied English victory over the French at Agincourt.
